Bridging the Generational Gap: Baby Boomers, GenX, and Millennials

Presented by; Andrew Winter, IP1

Differences across generations can create frustration, breakdowns in communication, and decreased productivity. These differences can cause tension everywhere, even in Toastmasters! There are two words that can mitigate that tension and build bridges: Understanding and Respect. When we put those words into action, we can connect with our peers, managers, fellow Toastmasters and all of humanity on a deeper level. In this workshop, we will:

  • Understand the cultural differences between the generations.
  • Explore respectful pros and cons in communication styles.
  • Test out our approaches to communicating across generations.

This will be a fun, comical, exploratory workshop to challenge the different generations to communicate outside of their stereotyped norms.  #Boomers, get ready to tweet your #feelings!  GenX, you can post a selfie on Facebook at the meeting! Millennials, join us for a faxable participation award!  As George Orwell said:  "Each generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it."
