Have you heard of the term Paradox of Choice?
This term was coined in 2004 to describe the overwhelm we feel when we are exposed to too many choices. Our brain is unable to efficiently process through all the choices offered. We then struggle to come to a conclusive or satisfactory decision.
As a result, we either delay making choices (procrastination), or make decisions we regret (buyer’s remorse), or make no decision at all (indecision).
So how does this apply to Toastmasters?
Every club at some point, especially those which have been around for a long time, go through a dip. This dip could be low membership, not enough officers to run the club, lack of proper leadership at the club level, members not actively participating in meetings etc…
When a club tries to get out of the dip, it is bombarded with lots of advice, suggestions, and inputs from various sources. The club leadership gets inundated by all the advice and viewpoints offered. They don’t know which of the various ideas they should implement. They then suffer through their own version of Paradox of Choice…
